Details of what is depicted
This painting is a miniature depiction of the tragedy of Rustam and his son Sohrab, a part of the story of Rustam, the greatest hero in the Iranian national epic poem "Shahnameh". Shahnameh is an epic poem that compiles the myths, legends, and history of ancient Iran, and is an extremely well-known national epic in Iran. The hero Rustam is one of the most famous characters in the Shahnameh, and the tragedy of Rustam and his son Sohrab in particular is still told as a moving story that deeply touches the hearts of the Iranian people even today.
As this carpet is based on a famous Iranian heroic legend, it is an artistic masterpiece that was created with the utmost sincerity by the Mirmehidi atelier. Not only is the composition of the pattern magnificent when viewed as a painting, but it is also technically impressive in that it is woven with several times more colors than a typical Qom silk carpet. Since it is a very famous story, I will explain the story behind the pattern.
Persian carpets can be enjoyed not only for their techniques and designs, but also by contemplating the meaning behind them, just like paintings. This carpet, which depicts the tragedy of Rustam and Sohrab, is an easy-to-understand example of a work that can be enjoyed in the same way as a painting.
So let's try to interpret this piece as a painting. Take a look at the photo below.
As shown in the photo, the painting is structured to include each scene in the story of Rostam and Sohrab on the same screen. This technique of simultaneously depicting events from different times is called "multi-temporal simultaneous depiction," and is commonly seen in historical paintings in the West (Europe) and East (China and Japan). As shown in the photo, the painting is divided into scenes 1 to 5, with the story beginning with scene 1 and concluding with scene 5, just like a picture book.
Now, let's explain each scene from 1 to 5, while also explaining the plot of "The Tragedy of Rostam and Sohrab."
First, take a look at scene 1 in the front view.
Scene 1 depicts the young hero Rostam and the beautiful princess Tahmineh, who would later become the mother of Sohrab, witnessing a lamassu, a winged bull-headed spirit. The lamassu is an ancient Persian spirit found in the palace decorations of the Achaemenid Empire, and is said to be in charge of evil, good fortune, and fertility. The appearance of this spirit suggests that the couple will have a child who will one day become an exceptional warrior.
Next, look at scene 2 in the front view.
Scene 2 depicts the grown-up son Sohrab's famous duel with the female warrior Goldafried. Goldafried is a heroine who is portrayed with great emphasis in the original work, and she is defeated after a fierce battle with Sohrab on her first battle. This scene depicts the dramatic moment when the brave warrior Sohrab takes Goldafried's helmet just before defeating her, and realizes that he has been fighting a woman. The moment he takes the helmet away, he is captivated by her beauty, and is amazed at the strength and beauty of Persian women, and mutters to himself, "If Persian women are this strong, men must be even stronger." She falls in love with Goldafried, but Goldafried, knowing that Persians cannot fall in love with foreign men, deceives Sohrab and manages to escape.
This scene also depicts his father, Rostam, and mother, Tahmineh, watching from outside the battlefield as they watch their son's heroic figure.
Next, look at scene 3 in the front view.
Scene 3 is one of the most famous scenes in the story of the hero Rostam, depicting his one-on-one battle with his son Sohrab. In the story, after a series of unfortunate events, the hero Rostam and the brave warrior Sohrab, father and son, engage in a fierce battle for three days on the battlefield without knowing who the other is. Although Rostam had defeated many monsters and heroic warriors up until that point, he was defeated by Sohrab many times in this battle, and was finally pinned down and nearly decapitated. Rostam escapes this crisis using a cunning plan, which is rare for his fighting style. Then, on the last day of the battle, Rostam prays to God and releases the power he had sealed away within himself. Using this power, Rostam finally defeats the brave warrior Sohrab.
However, just after killing the strongest enemy of his life, Rostam finds out that the enemy was his own son. This scene depicts the look of despair on Rostam's face after learning the truth just after killing his son, and at the same time, it depicts Tahmineh watching in shock at the tragedy of the two of them.
Next, look at scene 4 in the front view.
Scene 4 depicts the separation between Rostam and Tahmineh after the death of their son Sohrab. In the original work, there is no description of how Tahmineh felt about Rostam after her son's death. However, when Tahmineh found out that her son had been killed by his own father, she naturally could no longer love her husband Rostam. Therefore, by adding an interpretation that was not in the original work, this scene depicts the separation between the two who once loved each other and had a son.
Finally, take a look at scene 5 in the front view.
Scene 5 depicts Tahmineh, who has lost her son, reminiscing about his tragic life. Towards the end of the story, Tahmineh, who has lost her son, is deeply grieved. She cuts herself, pulls out her hair, beats her beautiful face and cries out the name of her son. The story then tells us that she died a year after her son's death, and ends with a long-winded exhortation about fate. This scene depicts Tahmineh, with her hair disheveled with grief, literally looking back at the events from before her son's birth to his death. With this composition, the carpet concludes the tragedy of Rostam and Sohrab as the tragic story of Tahmineh.
Above, I have explained the story depicted in this carpet. Looking at all the scenes, you will notice that the tragic story of Rostam and Sohrab is also told as the story of Rostam and Tahmineh. To tell the truth, Tahmineh appears much less prominently in the original than she does in this work. However, this work emphasizes the tragic nature of the story by depicting her as a major character alongside Rostam, and reconstructs the original, written in the Middle Ages, as a great tragedy that is literally relevant to the modern day.
This work, which is filled with the same narrative quality as a painting, also possesses noteworthy features in terms of the carpet's technical aspects.
What did you think of the story?
[Comment from Golestan]
Hand-knotted Persian carpets are works of art that are so intricately crafted that when viewed from a distance they can be mistaken for paintings made with brushes. They are truly magnificent works of art that draw the viewer in and leave them breathless.
I don't think there are many silk Persian carpets of this quality.
In Iran, many proverbs and books have been published based on this story. The more you know about this carpet, the deeper your love for it. It has a magical power. Also, the color of a silk carpet can look lighter or darker depending on the angle, so you can enjoy the unique texture of silk. The variety of designs, the precision of the patterns, and the strength of the knots make this a work of art that is so intricate that it is hard to believe it was hand-woven...
It can also be framed in a high-quality picture frame, so you can hang it on the wall and use it immediately.
Simply decorating the walls with the finest Persian carpets will create a luxurious, elegant and atmospheric space.
It would also look great in an antique or classic style room.
The actual product is several times better than in the photos, and I'm sure you'll love it.
