Vivid blue color, unusual square shape, pattern is a mix of medallion pattern and tree of life
Artwork description:
The design of this piece is mainly a combination of medallion patterns and Drakhti. Drakhti means "tree pattern" and is a pattern featuring the "tree of life," a symbol of life. The design of this piece is a rare carpet measuring 1m square, with a circular medallion "window" inside, featuring cherry blossom and plum blossom-like trees and birds.
This piece was produced by the Mirmehidi Atelier, and it is worth noting that the pattern was originally designed for the Japanese market. Currently, Mirmehidi Atelier's main clients are Arab countries, but there was a time when Japan accounted for 70% of their suppliers. Square carpets were quite popular at the time, and designs that Japanese people liked were apparently incorporated into the carpet patterns. This piece uses a design created during that period. If you look closely, you will be able to see many designs that are familiar to Japanese people of the time and today.
As can be seen from other carpets, Mirmehidi Atelier is known for its carpet designs that feature colorful floral motifs scattered all over the carpet. This piece can be evaluated as a masterpiece that skillfully incorporates traditional oriental designs and beautifully combines them with the artist's own speciality.
As we have seen in this piece, Persian carpets not only combine traditional Iranian patterns, but it is not uncommon for them to incorporate foreign designs from the East and the West. Therefore, when appreciating carpets, if you look at them while thinking of the paintings and crafts you have seen so far, you may be able to enjoy discovering unexpected similarities and even feeling historical connections.

Detailed description of the colours shown:
The design of this piece is primarily a combination of Mehrab and Drakhti patterns. Mehrab is a Persian word for a mosque's altar, a recessed structure carved into the front wall of a mosque's prayer hall. Drakhti, on the other hand, means "tree pattern" and features the "tree of life," a symbol of life. For people living in the arid regions of the Middle East, where desert occupies much of the land and greenery is scarce, the "tree of life" evokes the image of a watery oasis, where flowers grow and become a garden. The image of a paradise where birds and animals gather, blooming trees and flowers, and birds flying around, evokes a mystical place where animal life is born from nature—a paradise. A green environment and paradise are dreams shared by everyone. Therefore, it is thought that the Mirmehidi workshop, which created this piece, was trying to express on the carpet a "mysterious space filled with dreams and hope" by combining the two patterns. Carpet lovers know that the color of a high-quality silk carpet changes dramatically depending on the sunlight conditions and the angle of the light that hits it. Persian carpets often feature designs that make use of this characteristic of silk. Let's take this piece as an example. The photo below was taken with the carpet laid on the floor.
If you photograph the carpet at night in a darkened room with a lamp lit near it, you'll see that the mosque's canopy and columns stand out in a golden hue, and the flowers of the Tree of Life that surround the canopy and columns stand out even more vividly. It seems likely that the Mirmehidi workshop took advantage of the properties of silk to weave the carpet in a way that made the mosque and Tree of Life stand out. What meaning is embedded in this piece, which features such a design? The carpet's composition, with its floral medallion pattern in the corner (called the Hasiyeh Bozorg) and the mosque and Tree of Life placed inside the square guard (called the Hasiyeh Kucek), suggests the following possible interpretations:
"In a flower-filled garden, a square entrance to the Garden of Eden opens. Looking through the entrance, one can see the mosque, and beyond that, heaven itself with the Tree of Life (Tree of Eden) growing there. When sunlight shines into the room, the entrance to the Garden of Eden and the mosque change color and shine with a golden hue."
Persian carpets can be enjoyed not only for their techniques and designs, but also by contemplating the meanings embedded in the work, just like paintings. (I believe this is also an enjoyment that can be found in Japanese tea utensils and lacquerware such as makie.)
According to the Mirmehidi workshop, this pattern is very popular among Arab oil tycoons (called sheikhs), and I believe this is because this carpet is a work that combines both skill and story. Also, as an auspicious symbol, the large tree represents "growth" and "longevity." It also represents a wish for greater wealth.
Mirmehidi Atelier's masterpiece, "Tree of Life," breathes life into the space with its delicate colors and intricate weaving.
This silk Persian carpet beautifully depicts the "Tree of Life," a traditional Persian carpet motif. Appearing in tribal rituals and myths around the world, the "Tree of Life" symbolizes longevity and prosperity. It is also known as "Drakhti" in Persian and "Tree of Life" in English. For people living in arid regions, this motif symbolizes an oasis, a source of life, where flowers and animals gather, creating a mystical, paradise-like place.
The field color is a mix of blue and sky blue, and this vividly woven carpet uses several times more colors than other Qom silk carpets. The result is a highly artistic and captivatingly beautiful color palette. The realistically depicted "Tree of Life" features 10 types of flowers, including roses, dahlias, and jasmine, blooming in abundance, and a wide variety of birds flocking about. Utilizing the texture of the silk, the flowers and birds are depicted as if they stand out in three dimensions.
The sub-border features a repeated design of two birds facing each other with a flower in between, creating a balanced overall look. Furthermore, the main border features a series of delicately designed roses, which harmonize with the overall field color of blue, highlighting the vibrant beauty of nature.
This carpet is not just a decorative piece, but a work that evokes the power of life and nature. Its beautiful colors and intricate design give the space a mystical energy, creating a special presence in any space. This masterpiece, which took 22 months to weave, is truly a magnificent workmanship that can only be expected from the latest creation of a renowned workshop.
