Description
The entire rug is covered in a detailed komon (small pattern) reminiscent of fine diamonds and fishbones (mahi = fish pattern), with oval medallions floating above. This is the pinnacle of detailed design that Tabriz has refined over centuries.
Tabriz — A tradition of intricate detail refined in an ancient city
The ancient city of Tabriz in the heart of northwestern Iran is a region whose name appears most frequently in the history of Persian carpets. Centered around its grand bazaar and numerous workshops, the intricate weaving tradition, inherited from court decorations, is still preserved today. This piece is a classic design woven in the workshop style of Tabriz.
Intricate hand-weaving, solid construction
With approximately 320,000 knots per square meter, the pattern's outlines are clearly defined. The natural variations in knotting, characteristic of hand-weaving, create subtle textures in how light reflects off the surface. Tabriz rugs are known for their robust construction, densely knotted with meticulous weaving, and they become more familiar and beautiful with prolonged use.
