This composition originated in Arak (formerly Sultanabad) in central Persia, where it has been woven since the late 19th century. The continuous all-over pattern of flowers and leaves is called "Afshan" in Persian. These rugs were exported to Europe and America at the time and were beloved in stately homes furnished with antique furniture. It is a classic style that complements traditional interiors.
