The closer you get and the harder you look, the more faces emerge from the weave. In the center are two figures facing each other, below them a large animal's face, and on either side a pair of peacocks. At first glance, it appears to be a medallion-patterned rug, but it can actually be interpreted as a single painting.

Qum Silk, a pictorial tableau with hidden figures and animals

This is a 100% silk rug hand-woven by the Samadi workshop in Qum, a holy city in central Iran. A medallion outlined in gold is placed on an indigo ground, and within it, human figures, animal faces, a pair of birds (peacocks), and boteh patterns (paisleys) are intricately woven. In the world of Persian carpets, this is a genre called "tableau (pictorial design)," and it is a difficult composition that requires a skilled weaver even within Qum. When the owner first saw it locally, they felt, "This is more of a painting than a floor covering," and chose it.

Intricacy only possible with fine threads

Because of the fine silk threads, an intricacy is created that allows even facial expressions and bird feathers to be distinguished. The way the colors change depending on the direction of the pile is also a luster unique to silk.

New discoveries every time you display and view it

78 x 118 cm is a standard size for doormats, but many people frame this piece and use it as a wall hanging. Because colors and shapes are so dense, the closer you look, the more new motifs you will find in this rug. Since silk is tightly woven, it does not attract fine dust, static electricity is less likely to occur, and daily care only requires vacuuming.
