Detailed description of the colours shown:
The design of this piece is primarily a combination of Mehrab and Drakhti patterns. Mehrab is a Persian word for a mosque's altar, a recessed structure carved into the front wall of a mosque's prayer hall. Drakhti, on the other hand, means "tree pattern" and features the "tree of life," a symbol of life. For people living in the arid regions of the Middle East, where desert occupies much of the land and greenery is scarce, the "tree of life" evokes the image of a watery oasis, where flowers grow and become a garden. The image of a paradise where birds and animals gather, blooming trees and flowers, and birds flying around, evokes a mystical place where animal life is born from nature—a paradise. A green environment and paradise are dreams shared by everyone. Therefore, it is thought that the Mirmehidi workshop, which created this piece, was trying to express on the carpet a "mysterious space filled with dreams and hope" by combining the two patterns. Carpet lovers know that the color of a high-quality silk carpet changes dramatically depending on the sunlight conditions and the angle of the light that hits it. Persian carpets often feature designs that make use of this characteristic of silk. Let's take this piece as an example. The photo below was taken with the carpet laid on the floor.
If you photograph the carpet at night in a darkened room with a lamp lit near it, you'll see that the mosque's canopy and columns stand out in a golden hue, and the flowers of the Tree of Life that surround the canopy and columns stand out even more vividly. It seems likely that the Mirmehidi workshop took advantage of the properties of silk to weave the carpet in a way that made the mosque and Tree of Life stand out. What meaning is embedded in this piece, which features such a design? The carpet's composition, with its floral medallion pattern in the corner (called the Hasiyeh Bozorg) and the mosque and Tree of Life placed inside the square guard (called the Hasiyeh Kucek), suggests the following possible interpretations:
"In a flower-filled garden, a square entrance to the Garden of Eden opens. Looking through the entrance, one can see the mosque, and beyond that, heaven itself with the Tree of Life (Tree of Eden) growing there. When sunlight shines into the room, the entrance to the Garden of Eden and the mosque change color and shine with a golden hue."
Persian carpets can be enjoyed not only for their techniques and designs, but also by contemplating the meanings embedded in the work, just like paintings. (I believe this is also an enjoyment that can be found in Japanese tea utensils and lacquerware such as makie.)
According to the Mirmehidi workshop, this pattern is very popular among Arab oil tycoons (called sheikhs), and I believe this is because this carpet is a work that combines both skill and story. Also, as an auspicious symbol, the large tree represents "growth" and "longevity." It also represents a wish for greater wealth.
