When hung in a hallway or on a wall, a circular painting appears to float in the center of the frame. It depicts a scene of an ancient Persian hunt, painted as a miniature on a silk rug: a rider on horseback, holding a bow and sword against a backdrop of mountains, with deer, wolves, and gazelles running ahead.

Sadeghzadeh Workshop's Hunting Motif (Shekargar / Horsemen and Mountain Landscape)

This piece is from the Sadeghzadeh Workshop, made of Qum silk. "Shekargar (hunting motif)" is a classic among classics, weaving traditional themes of Persian miniature painting into a rug. The central circular panel depicts three horsemen, fleeing deer, wolves, and gazelles, birds flying in the sky, and mountains with rocky surfaces. A floral wreath surrounds the circle like a frame, and the four corners feature small animal scenes in semicircular cartouches. The weaver's signature is at the bottom. This is a rare square (102x105cm) piece that condenses a single miniature painting.

The Luster and Intricacy of 100% Silk

Because it is 100% silk, the closer you look, the more details emerge: the patterns on the riders' costumes, the horses' manes, the rocks on the mountainsides, the tips of the running animals' legs, and even the feathers of the birds and animals in the four corners. The luster of the silk changes with the angle of light, creating a three-dimensional effect in the mountainous landscape of the circular panel – the true essence of Qum silk.
