About the Jeddi Workshop

— The hidden pinnacle of Qom silk, never seen on the market —The Jeddi Workshop, in Qom, the sacred land of Persian carpets, enjoys such fame that there is no one who does not know its name, and yet it is a "phantom workshop" whose works never appear on the general market (the bazaar) at all. It was founded in 1972 by the eldest son, Ali Jeddi (then 19 years old), and is run by the three brothers: the second son Abolghasem and the third son Mohsen. Even within Japan it is praised alongside famous workshops such as "Mirmehdi" and "Jamshidi," trading in the price range of several million yen, and its asset value and artistry are extremely highly regarded. History. Founded: 1972, established by the eldest son, Ali. Succession: his younger brothers trained under their elder brother from their teens, and now each of the three brothers is active as an independent master. Track record: only a small number of works have been made in the roughly thirty-odd years since its founding. Because of its thorough quality control, an extremely small production volume is one of its features. Distinguishing the works and the difference in value. The works of the Jeddi Workshop that currently appear on the market are mainly by the hands of the eldest son, Ali Jeddi, or the second son, Abolghasem, and the difference can be clearly judged from the signature woven into the work. In particular, the works of the founder, the eldest son Ali Jeddi, are considered in a class of their own. History and weight: Ali has the longest career and embodies the very history of the workshop. Rarity and price: because of the difficulty of production and the depth of its history, Ali's works are even rarer and trade for higher prices than Abolghasem's works. Three features of the Jeddi Workshop. 1. Thorough secrecy and rarity. To prevent the theft of designs, the workshop avoids displaying its works at local shops or exhibitions. It is difficult to find them even in the local bazaar of Qom, but this is the result of a "known only to those in the know" brand strategy, and it has earned such trust that buyers and collectors from around the world come to purchase directly. 2. An astonishing weaving density (1.3 million knots). It is woven at an extremely high density of about 1.3 million knots per square meter, surpassing ordinary high-grade silk carpets. Because of this fineness, a single piece (1 m²) takes about a year to produce. Everything, from the selection of the thread to the dyeing, is carried out under the strict supervision of Ali Jeddi himself. 3. The original "kilim-pile" technique and colors. What could be called the hallmark of the Jeddi Workshop is the decoration of the kilim sections near the upper and lower tassels (fringes). Using an advanced technique of weaving pile into the flat-woven kilim ground, it features designs that make letters, lion motifs, and the like rise up three-dimensionally. Its colors, too, excel at pale, refined tones that make abundant use not only of red and navy but also of pastel colors such as green, blue, and yellow, depicting dome (ceiling) patterns and floral designs in a dreamlike way. Overall assessment. Without flashy advertising, it is a rare workshop that has established a worldwide reputation through nothing but overwhelming "quality" and "technique." Its works are treated not as mere floor coverings but as works of art.

The Workshop's Signature (Ali Jeddi Workshop)

In the signature area at the top and bottom of the work, "Qom Ali Jeddi" is proudly inscribed in a flowing Persian script. Also, below that signature (in the kilim section) are depicted the "lion holding a sword and the sun (Shir-o-Khorshid)," and at the center the motif of a "crown." These are not mere decorations but special designs that have long been revered in Persian history as symbols of royal power, strength, justice, wisdom, and glory, lending a dignity permitted only to the finest works.

The Workshop's Signature (Ali Jeddi Workshop)

The works of the second son, Abolghasem Jeddi, also bear a refined, dignified signature, just like his elder brother's. In the signature area, "Qom Abolghasem Jeddi" is woven in a beautiful Persian script, and by this signature it is clearly possible to tell that the maker is the second son. Below it (in the kilim section), the symbols of the Jeddi Workshop, the "lion holding a sword and the sun" and the "crown," are depicted alternately. In Persian culture these are traditional auspicious patterns meaning strength, justice, and the majesty of the royal house. This emblem quietly tells us that Abolghasem's works, too, legitimately carry on the family's pride and the highest standards of quality.

Features of Color and Pattern

Each workshop has its own distinctive features of color and pattern.

Features of Color and Pattern

The Persian carpets of the Jeddi Workshop are charming for a "beauty of pale colors" and a "three-dimensional, novel weave" found nowhere else. In addition to traditional colors such as red and navy, they make abundant use of pastel colors such as green, blue, and yellow, and by using "twisted thread" made by twisting together several colors of thread, they give off a dreamlike radiance whose colors change in complex ways depending on the angle from which you view them. In terms of design, in addition to dome (ceiling) patterns and floral designs, they adopt their own technique of weaving pile into the kilim section near the tassels (fringes). The motifs of the "lion holding a sword and the sun" and the "crown" are depicted as if in relief, symbolizing royal power, strength, justice, and glory.
