Description
Hang it in your entryway or on a wall, and a deep navy and gold circular sun medallion emerges from the terracotta ground. Look closely at the top edge, and you'll see capital of the double-headed bull, a symbol of the ancient Persian Empire's capital Persepolis, and reliefs of kings and soldiers woven in a band pattern—a scene that condenses the splendor of pre-Christian eras into a small frame.
Abbas Jamshidi Workshop "Persepolis" (Double-Headed Bull and King's Relief)
This piece, "Takht Jamshidi" from the Abbas Jamshidi Workshop, a Qom silk carpet workshop, is named after the ancient Persian Empire's capital, which is now the Persepolis ruins. In the center is a circular sun medallion, surrounded by a light blue oval. The terracotta (reddish-brown/brick color) ground is adorned with intricate arabesque patterns and flowers, and the border has a double composition of terracotta on the inside and dark blue on the outside. The most prominent feature is the band pattern at the top edge—the double-headed bull capitals and reliefs of kings and soldiers from the Persepolis ruins are woven in a pictorial scroll-like fashion, thread by thread. This is a masterpiece of architectural motifs, a specialty of Mr. Abbas.
The Luster and Detail of 100% Silk
Because it is 100% silk, the closer you get, the more details you can see, from the sun medallion in the center, to the intricate arabesques on the ground, the continuous flowers of the double border, the double-headed bull and king's relief at the top edge, and the color changes in each thread of the border. The luster of the silk changes with the angle of the light, and deep navy and light blue emerge from the terracotta earth color—this is the true essence of Qom silk.
How to Incorporate it into Your Life
At 58x91cm, it's the perfect size for an entryway mat, framed as a wall hanging, in front of a desk in a study, or beside a bed. The terracotta and dark blue pair well with both white walls and wood floors, adding an intellectual depth to the space, as if visiting ancient Persian ruins. This piece is suitable for those who want to read history in the band pattern at the top, which differs from the medallion's more understated color scheme.
This is a one-of-a-kind item personally acquired by the owner directly from the Abbas Jamshidi Workshop in Qom. You can see the actual luster, details of the medallion, and the weaving of the Persepolis relief at the top in the video. Golestan, a specialty store for Persian carpets.
